The History of the Kitzbuhel Hahnenkamm

Known as The Streif, named after the farmer of the meadow at the top of the race, is in its 80th year. This iconic downhill race takes place 24th – 26th January 2020. The first international race took place in 1931 and over the years the best skiers in the world have tried, with many failing, to race the most difficult downhill in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup calendar.

There have been some iconic winners over the years, many are skiing household names, and they will go down as skiing heroes. Take the gondola and you will see the winners names on the bubbles with probably the most famous of them all being Franz Klammer, the Austrian who won the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel 4 times. The Frenchman Jean-Claude Killy, however, beats even Klammer by winning 7 times. He became so famous that the ski area of Val d’Isere and Tignes is named in his honour as L’Espace Killy.

The Hahnenkamm Race

Hahnenkamm men’s downhill race, The Streif, has to be THE big one to win for the world’s top ski racers. The start of the race at an altitude of 1,665m drops to the valley floor after a vertical descent of over 800m in the fastest time of 1:51.58 minutes, set by Fritz Strobi, with an average speed of 103km/h. With a 51 percent start the racers reach the mousetrap jump in just 8 seconds and take off for 80m, making it the longest jump on the course.

The timetable is currently set with the Super-G taking place on Friday 24th Jan 2020. The highlight of this amazing Kitzbuhel ski event being the Downhill, starting at 11.30am on the Saturday 25th, with the two slalom courses on the Sunday finishing off the weekend of racing. The Kitzbuhel parties will no doubt continue throughout the night.

Outside race times, The Streif can be tackled by good intermediate skiers, with less experienced skiers able to miss out the most difficult areas and take the Rd 21 piste. Only expert skiers should tackle the parts that are marked as “extreme winter routes”.
